Pavia
Italian capital of rice growing, university city, stage of the ancient Via Francigena towards Rome … in a word: Pavia.
The city is linked to the history of the Visconti family, which left visible traces in the city architecture. Among the attractions of the city are the Visconteo Castle, the Cathedral with the adjacent market and the covered bridge over the Ticino.
Furthermore, immersed in the countryside around Pavia, a few kilometers from the city center, you will find one of the greatest Italian Renaissance masterpieces in front of your eyes: the Certosa di Pavia, whose construction began on 27 August 1396 and it was Gian Galeazzo himself who placed the first stone.
This monastery was built by Gian Galeazzo Visconti as a family chapel, which is directly connected to the castle through the Visconteo Park. However, the church was covered at the behest of Francesco Sforza in 1462, while the large cloister was finished in 1472.
The Certosa di Pavia later opened its museum to the public, for the first time, in 1911
